Q: Can acupuncture and herbal medicine help me?
A: A common misunderstanding about acupuncture is that it is only indicated for acute pain. In reality it can be used to treat a multitude of ailments including the common cold, digestive disorders, skin problems and insomnia.

Q: How does acupuncture treat so many different things?
A: Because they work in a holistic manner, acupuncture and herbal medicine often treat many seemingly unrelated symptoms at once. In the paradigm of traditional acupuncture, these seemingly unrelated aches and pains can point to a single pattern of disharmony. When the pattern, or root, is treated, multiple symptoms can be addressed at once.

Q: Does it hurt?
A: People are often surprised to learn that acupuncture treatments can be quite relaxing. While Hollywood likes to portray people being used as pin cushions for thousands of needles, most treatments utilize only a small number of strategically placed, very thin needles. When they are first inserted some people experience a mild pinching sensation, but it quickly dissipates and the patient feels no further discomfort for the remainder of the treatment.

Q: Will I have to take herbs?
A: Herbs, in both tea and powdered extract form, are often recommended for acupuncture patients. These herbs are specifically prescribed for each patient and are usually taken daily between acupuncture appointments to bolster the positive effects of the treatment and speed healing.

Q: How long does it take?
A: Typically the initial visit takes approximately an hour and a half. This time is used to discuss your health as a whole, in addition to any specific discomfort you would like to address, and to devise a holistic approach to your treatment. Follow up visits are about 45 minutes.

Q: How many times do I need to get acupuncture?
A: Every patient is different. In general, treatments for acute cases consist of more frequent visits for shorter periods of time, for example 3-6 appointments over 1-3 weeks. Chronic cases can be more involved. It is difficult to know exactly how long a course of treatment may take, but an example might be 8 visits over a two month period. A personalized plan will be made to suit your individual case. After the initial ailment is treated, many people enjoy regular “check ups” and like to come in once a month to maintain a healthy, balanced body.

Q: Why are your prices lower than many other practitioners?
A: To quote my teacher and mentor: “amidst the chaos of today’s rising cost of medical care, we as health care practitioners have the power to lower the cost of medical care while increasing the quality.”

Q: Do you take health insurance?
A: Yes. I accept many health insurance plans and can call your insurance for you to find out what your acupuncture benefits are before you come in for your first visit.
